THREE, IS A MAGIC NUMBER
The highlighting/strobing trend isn’t going anywhere. It’s the most beautiful way to fake a healthy glow, accentuate your favourite features and instantly brighten the face. As with all makeup, there is no one size fits all when it comes to highlighter; golden champagnes, peachy shimmers and ice cool hues are all cast members of the same highlighting arena but with very different results. So what about for the fair skinned girls?

Highlighting is all about adding light to the face; remember the rule of thumb: light brings things forward (highlights) dark pushes things back (contours). This is why we highlight the tops of cheekbones, brow bones and cupids bow, to bring these parts of the face forwards and upwards. So what happens when your skin is so fair that many highlighters look darker than your skin tone? I’ve rounded up three of the best highlighters for fair skin tones on the market and even thrown in a drugstore dupe which more than keeps up with the pack.
Swatches from left to right on main image: Collection Speedy Highlighter, Becca Pearl, Anastasia Beverly Hills Starlight, Benefit High Beam
Becca Cosmetics, in my eyes, is the queen of highlighting kingdom. Available in liquid, powder and crème formulations, Becca offers a highlighter for any occasion. Smooth, finely milled and buttery in texture, the pressed highlighting powders are some of the very best. The brand’s latest offering, Pearl, is one for fair skins or for those who love an ‘I am wearing highlighter’ highlighter; almost white with miniscule flecks of gold and pink which catch the light in the most beautiful way.
Benefit High Beam
An oldie but a goodie, High Beam looks pearly pink in the bottle but blends seamlessly with even the fairest of skins, leaving behind a glowy, not glittery, sheen. This liquid highlighter can be used under foundation, blended with foundation, on top of foundation… it’s a multitasker! We find the best way to apply this is to tap over skin with fingers then blend away the edges with a damp beauty sponge.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator in Starlight
Anastasia just does things right. First came her now-cult brow products, next up is her range of illuminators. Favoured by YouTube gurus, makeup artists and beauty lovers alike, these illuminators aren’t one for the faint-hearted. Want added intensity? Apply with a damp brush! Simply spritz your favourite highlight brush with MAC Fix+ and swirl in this powder for an unrivalled highlight.
The drugstore winner: Collection Speedy Highlighter
A fair-skinned highlighter doesn’t have to break the bank. Collection Speedy Highlighter does exactly what is says; a healthy glow in seconds. Simply swipe across the high points of the face and blend with fingers or fluffy brush for the easiest glow without a glitter particle in sight. I like to use this highlighter on its own for daytime or as a base for a powder highlight for a more intense evening highlight.
