A summer Pilates class with Lottie Murphy

The benefits of Pilates are endless. If you are interested in improving your posture, balance and joint mobility, as well as toning muscle and relieving stress and tension, then Pilates is something you should be incorporating into your routine.

In an effort to improve our flexibility after tapping away on laptops all day, we headed down to Planet Organic on Tottenham Court Road where health coach and wellbeing blogger and YouTuber Lottie Murphy hosted a Pilates session. The class lasted for one hour and involved a variety of total body toning moves, working on strengthening the core and tightening the lower body.

For those of you who are not familiar with Pilates, it was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. The great thing about Pilates is that all ages and levels of fitness can reap its benefits. For example, reformer Pilates machine classes are aimed at more experienced Pilates-goers – you choose the level of intensity you want from your workout. We would place Lottie’s class at an intermediate level; the movements were small but we really felt the burn with the amount of repetitions. One thing we particularly enjoyed was the focus that was required – with Pilates, you really need to pay attention to your form to make sure you are completing the moves correctly. We tend to hunch over our laptops and this was reflected during the session – Lottie would gently remind us to lower our shoulders.

If you’re looking for a way to relieve stress and tension in the body, Pilates is the way to go. As Lottie promised at the beginning of the session, we left feeling a little bit taller from all the stretching!

It was also our first visit to Planet Organic and we have to say it was a struggle not to walk out of there with bags of nut butter varieties and copious tea options. We couldn’t resist picking up a few new things to try, including Co Yo coconut yoghurt, grain-free granola and some raw cacao chocolate – none of which disappointed! Not so much of a foodie? Planet Organic also has a large beauty selection (hooray!) and stocks a couple of our Love Me Beauty favourites, including Trilogy and Weleda.

Many thanks to Lottie and Planet Organic for an invigorating way to spend a Thursday evening.
