In a packed beauty hall, it can be hard to know where to scrimp and where to splurge. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that more expensive products are better, but we’re here to tell you that that’s not always the case. Sure, a luxury brand might be really good, but these products are doing something really special for a fraction of the price!

When it comes to foundation, it’s all about the three things – finish, wear and colour. A strong foundation will always have a good colour range and wear really well, but finish is all down to personal preference. A good all-rounder with a slightly matte finish is Revlon’s ColourStay foundation – it stays put for up to 24-hours, comes in 22 shades and boasts two different formulas for combination/oily or normal/dry skin. The formula for oily skin contains salicylic acid to balance skin over time, while the one aimed at dry skin contains hydrating hyaluronic acid to tackle a lack of moisture. Nifty!

Concealer can be tricky to get right, depending on what you’re trying to conceal. To stay flawless, we recommend having two different concealers for under the eye and blemishes, as heavy under-eye concealer will only emphasise bags and dark circles. Choose bareMinerals bareSkin Serum Concealer in a slightly lighter shade than your foundation for an ultra-lightweight formula that looks dewy under the eye. Avoid using lighter shades of concealer on blemishes, as the difference in colour will only highlight the imperfection. Opt for a high-coverage formula, such as Maybelline Fit Me! Concealer, for non-cakey staying-power all day!

With so many mascaras on the market, it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Girls with short lashes will be looking for longer length, while girls with length will be looking for va-va-voom volume! Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Mascara is our go-to for great volume – the black ink formula darkens and defines lashes, while the wand is designed to capture the tiny lashes you didn’t even know you had! For luscious length, L’Oréal Paris Telescopic False Lash Effect Mascara is a real winner – with its innovative lengthening fibre formula, you’ll have flirty fluttery lashes in no time.

A subtle kiss of colour and a hit of moisture is all you really need for everyday lip wear. Maybelline’s New York Baby Lips Lip Balm in Peach Kiss does just that, with a perfect hint of shimmery pink. When you need a touch more colour, Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons offer six shades – they’re just as moisturising as their trusty balm with a perfect pop of colour. Mwah!

Don’t really use blusher? More of a bronzer or contour fan? We get that, but we think blusher is hugely underrated and it’s big business this season. Perfect for adding a healthy flush of colour to the cheeks, blusher is ideal for spring! We have a theory that many of you have been put off this 80’s favourite by a bad experience with the wrong colour.
